ChatGPT search and AI training are different things

You can allow search discovery without giving the same instruction to the training crawler.
The short answer
OpenAI documents separate controls for OAI-SearchBot, which supports ChatGPT search, and GPTBot, which crawls content that may be used for model training. These settings are independent. Blocking every AI bot as one group can therefore block a search route you actually wanted.
How the search works
ChatGPT can search the web when a question benefits from current information. OpenAI says it sometimes rewrites a question into targeted searches and sends those to search providers. The answer may link to sources. This is different from assuming a model already knows your business because it once read your website.
What this means for a small business
Decide separately whether you want your public pages available for search and whether you want to allow the training crawler. Ask your website provider to review both robots.txt and firewall/CDN rules. A bot can be allowed by the file and still blocked by the hosting layer. Do not disable your security protection wholesale.
One thing to do
Send your provider this question: "Can OAI-SearchBot fetch our public service pages, and is our GPTBot policy set separately? Please show the current rules and a successful fetch." You do not need to supply a password to ask this.
What this does not mean
Allowing a crawler does not guarantee a recommendation or a high position. OpenAI explicitly says there is no way to guarantee top placement. This is an access check, not an AI ranking shortcut.
